Keeping Your Child Safe in Music Lessons (The Importance of a Family Safety Plan)

As a parent, nothing is more important than your child’s safety. When choosing a music school or studio, the focus often falls on the curriculum, teachers, or performance opportunities. But one of the most critical things to consider is how seriously the school takes your child’s safety.
I opened my music school because I felt that existing programs often overlooked essential child safety practices. As both a father and an educator, I made it my mission to build a warm, compassionate environment where families could feel confident that their children are safe. That’s why a built-in Family Safety Plan is at the heart of everything we do.

Whether you're considering my school or exploring other options, here’s what you should look for in a music school’s safety plan:
1. Glass Windows on All Doors
Transparency is key, literally. That's why every classroom in our school has large glass windows on the doors. This allows parents to easily see into their child’s lesson without disturbing it. It’s the perfect balance for older kids who prefer privacy while also reassuring parents that everything is in plain view.
2. Office Staff Always Present
Many schools cut costs by limiting administrative staff. But in my academy, we always have office staff on duty during lessons. This ensures that no child is ever alone with a teacher, especially during evening hours. It’s a non-negotiable for us, and it should be for you too.
3. Comprehensive Background Checks
Every teacher and staff member must pass four rigorous background checks before they are hired:
National Sex Offender Search
Statewide Criminal Background Check
National Criminal Background Check
Social Security Number Verification
These checks aren’t just policy, they’re essential to preserving the safety and integrity of our school community.
4. Security Cameras in Every Room
We’ve installed security cameras in every classroom and common area. While this is a significant investment, we believe that student safety and parents' peace of mind are priceless. Cameras act as a strong deterrent and provide accountability at all times.
5. Open-Door Policy for Parents
Parents are welcome to sit in on any lesson at any time. This open-door policy ensures you are always connected to your child’s learning environment. If a school you’re considering doesn’t offer this, ask why.
6. Open Floor Plan and Family-Friendly Layout
Our facility features a clean, open design that promotes visibility and ease of movement throughout the space. Families can relax in comfortable seating areas while watching lessons through our glass windows. Avoid schools with cramped or hidden classrooms. Visibility and accessibility are crucial for safety.
Final Thoughts
Whether or not you choose to enroll your child in my academy, I urge you to ask questions about safety when evaluating any music school. Request to see their family safety plan. Ensure it includes transparency, supervision, security, and accessibility.
At our academy, safety isn’t an afterthought- It’s the foundation. Because we don’t just teach music; we take care of the children who come to learn it.
